Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves the insertion of tiny electrodes into the deep parts of the brain that control movement, and delivering carefully selected stimulation to those brain regions. DBS has revolutionized the care of adults with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia, and is now being offered to pediatric patients at our specialized center, the Pediatric Movement Disorders Center at Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. In collaboration with functional and stereotactic neurosurgeon Dr. Fran Ponce, our DBS team is now accepting patients with dystonia and related disorders for pre-surgical evaluations.

In addition to carefully selecting patients through state of the art neuroimaging studies and careful clinical evaluation, potential candidates typically undergo neuropsychological evaluation and motion analysis prior to surgery. Post-surgical programming is performed by Dr. Kruer. Our DBS program is part of the international pediatric DBS registry. Learn more about DBS.
