What led you to your career as a neurology doctor?
I am interested in neuroscience and I love working with children.
What is the best thing about your job?
My patients and my colleagues.
Have you received a special gift of thanks or piece of artwork from a child?
One of my patients recently graduated to an adult neurologist after many years under my care, and gave me a wonderful nature photograph that she had taken.
What is your favorite children's book?
We always enjoyed the Berenstain Bears series of books, but my kids are all grown up now.
How do you go about calming a child's fears? Aside from the wonderful work of the Child Life team?
If you can get the child's parent to relax, usually things go smoothly for everyone.
How do you build trust with a parent?
Parents like to ask a lot of questions, and making time for that is important.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Reading and gardening.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
My wife and I particularly enjoy Italian food.
Can you tell us about your family?
We have three grown children, living in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Where are you originally from, and how did you get here?
My wife and I are both native San Franciscans. We moved to Phoenix 20 years ago in order for me to accept a position at the Barrow Neurological Institute.
