About Mark P. Popenhagen, PsyD

Dr. Popenhagen is a psychologist with clinical specialization in Pediatric Psychology, Pain Management, and Palliative Care. He received his doctoral degree at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology (currently Argosy University), in Egan, Minnesota. After completing his fellowship in Pediatric Psychology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, he continued on as their pain psychologist. He went on to pursue further pain management and palliative care opportunities at the University of Colorado/Children's Hospital of Denver and Loyola University Medical Center/Ronald McDonald Children's Hospital in Maywood, Illinois. Dr. Popenhagen joined Phoenix Children's Hospital in early 2013, and is serving as lead for mental health services in the pain medicine program.

Questions & Answers

What led you to your career as a psychologist?
I started in aerospace engineering but found that working with people was a lot more fun than working with equations. I started taking psychology classes and couldn't get enough!

What is the best thing about your job?
Getting to help add life to kids' years.

Have you received a special gift of thanks or piece of artwork from a child?
I have cherished every piece of artwork I've ever received from a patient.

What is your favorite children's book?
I have two: The Monster at the end of this Book, and Green Eggs and Ham

How do you go about calming a child's fears? Aside from the wonderful work of the Child Life team?
First and foremost I listen to what those fears are, and only then do we start working to battle the fears together.

How do you build trust with a parent?
First sit down and LISTEN and then keep listening.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Hanging out with my family, woodworking, fishing

What is your favorite local restaurant?
I haven't been here very long, but I do like the sushi at Stingray.

Where are you originally from, and how did you get here?
This is the 13th state that I've lived in! I came here just for Phoenix Children's Hospital and all the great opportunities here!
