Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship
We offer a Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship Program, accredited by the American Board of Dermatology, initiated in 2006 by Dr. Ronald Hansen. Currently the fellowship is under the direction of Dr. Harper Price, program director and Dr. Izzy Andrews, associate program director.
Fellows will staff both inpatient hospital consults and outpatient clinics. One half day a week is donated to both laser and surgical procedures in the operating room where fellows will perform and assist procedures utilizing five types of cutaneous lasers, as well as excisions, biopsies and other surgical procedures. Fellows take an active part in all of our subspecialty clinics and observe the multidisciplinary approach to complicated patients with vascular malformations and tumors, genetic skin diseases, epidermolysis bullosa and severe eczema.
Scheduled didactic time for fellows includes Journal Club, textbook review, pediatric dermatopathology case review and a weekly half-day continuity clinic. Opportunities also exist for those fellows interested in joining and/or initiating investigator-led clinical studies in our department. As directed by the American Board of Dermatology, scholarly projects are encouraged throughout the fellowship year.
Fellows will attend the Society for Pediatric Dermatology winter meeting, as well as the annual summer meeting, and are encouraged to submit abstracts for presentation at both meetings. They will also attend the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. (A stipend for continuing medical education is given to assist in the travel and meeting costs.) An excellent local course on melanoma and dermoscopy, offered by Mayo Clinic, is often attended by our fellows to enhance dermoscopy skills.
Opportunities to see patients in unique environments include our quarterly clinic in Nogales, Arizona at St. Andrews Children’s Clinic, where members of our staff volunteer to staff a dermatology clinic for children in need on both sides of the border.
